The chief officers at the Milton Fire Department
in Sussex County, Delaware have a new tool in
their arsenal. A 2009 Ford Expedition is
now serving the department as "Command 85".
Outfitted by DPC Emergency Equipment, the new
command unit will serve the community for many
years to come.
A Line-X coated, aluminum center console places
all essential controls at the driver's
fingertips in an organized fashion. This
includes a PowerCall DX5100, 100-watt electronic siren,
mobile radio, emergency switch panel, portable
radio charger, and KNOX-BOX. Other amenities in the
console are two cup holders and two 12-volt
outlets. The rear of the center console is
configured to house map books and other
reference material. Mounted on the right
side of the console is a laptop mount that
supports a Motorola laptop computer and Motorola
M800 mobile
phone. The laptop is illuminated by
a Havis-Shields map light.
In the rear command module is a myriad of
features and tools. The module itself is
constructed of 1/8" 5052 aluminum that has been
completely coated with black Line-X.
Flanking the box on either side are two vertical
slide-out boards. The one on the left side
is a dry erase board while the one on the right
is used to organize accountability tags.
Three Motorola mobile radios are located in the
upper portion of the console and are powered by
a Vanner 20-1050 inverter. An on/off switch wired
to the inverter is located adjacent to the
radios along with a switch to activate the
Whelen L360 Super LED, green command light on
the roof. Beneath the radios are two
pull-out drawers, one of which is equipped with
rails to accommodate hanging file folders.
A total of four, 110-volt straight blade outlets
are also incorporated into the face of the
command box. Perched atop the structure
are a pair of Motorola portable radio chargers
and Streamlight Survivor charger/holders, one of
each side. The left side of the module is
occupied by a complete computer work station
that includes a Motorola CPU, Planar PL1500 LCD
monitor, Sierra Wireless AirLink PinPoint X
mobile communications platform, and Motorola keyboard mounted on a
slide-out tray. Also mounted on a
slide-out tray below the keyboard is a
Hewlett-Packard Officejet J4680 wireless printer /
copier / fax / scanner. Any 12-volt
accessories can be powered at the rear via three
outlets located below the monitor. Tucked
away on each
side of the module are a pair of Motorola radio
speakers, one on each side.
The vehicle is equipped with the following
emergency warning light package:
(1) Whelen Freedom 55" LED lightbar on the
roof
(1) 3M Opticom emitter on the lightbar
(4) Whelen 500 Series TIR6 Super-LED lights in
the grille
(2) Whelen 500 Series Super-LED lights on the
front fenders
(6) Whelen TIR3 Super-LED lights spaced evenly
just above the running boards, three on each
side
(2) Whelen 500 Series Super-LED lights on the
inside of the rear hatch, to face rearward when
open

rear of roof to serve as a command light

rear bumper
(4) Hide-A-Way strobe lights, (1) in
each corner light housing
Two Whelen SlimLighter Super-LED
lights are located one on each side in the rear,
side facing windows. Located on the inside
of the rear hatch are a pair of Whelen Stripe-Lites
that provide illumination of the area when the rear hatch is in the open
position. Under the rear bumper is a
Kussmaul Super Auto-Eject outlet that is wired
to the inverter.
