The Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company in Kent
County, Delaware is now operating this PL Custom
Titan medium-duty ambulance. Built on a
2011 Freightliner M2 extended cab chassis, the new
Ambulance 55 has many unique features including
a custom interior layout. This unit
replaces a 2000 Freightliner FL50/Horton.
The PL Custom Titan body is a custom length,
176". It has 72" of interior
headroom and features a unique interior design
that incorporates a full-length streetside squad bench and a
double-wide seat on the curbside.
The seating area on each side incorporates a 6"
cutback to give personnel additional room to
maneuver around the stretcher. At
the head of the curbside seating area is a
custom three drawer storage unit.
Additional storage is provided behind the
backrests of the streetside squad.
The emergency warning light package is a
combination of Weldon and Whelen products.
Combined there are over 30 warning lights
throughout the vehicle. While the primary
lightbar is a 55" Whelen Freedom, all individual
light heads are Weldon Diamondback LED lights.
In addition there are seven Whelen OS LED lights
on each side of lower body which serve as
warning lights. The DOT marker
lights on the body also consist of Whelen OS LED
lights.
Centered in the lightbar is a Whelen Pioneer
12-volt LED scene light. A pair of Weldon
LED scene lights are located on each side and on
the rear of the body. In
addition there is a Whelen 700 Series red LED
light mounted on the interior of the curbside
and both rear entry doors. Each rear
facing body compartment door is equipped with a
4" amber LED flashing light as well.
There are several features inside the module
that are designed to enhance crew safety.
Several LED lights are located in the rear which
serve as a heads up indicator that the driver is
applying the vehicle's brakes. These
lights are located over the rear entry doors, in
the action area, and over the attendant seat. In addition
there is also a rear facing camera mounted
over the attendant seat that allows the driver
to monitor actions in the patient compartment as
needed.
There
is also a backup camera above the rear doors
that is wired to a ceiling-mounted monitor in
the cab.
Additional features include On-Spot automatic
tire chains, Whelen LED dome lights, Zico Eze-Load
oxygen tank lift, illuminated sight poles on the
front bumper, and a heavy-duty liner coating in
the exterior compartments. The roll-up
door compartments behind the cab doors are
equipped with SCBA brackets and also allow for
the storage of the crew's turnout gear.
