Description:
The La Plata
Volunteer Fire Department recently took delivery
of a custom-built brush truck constructed by DPC
Emergency Equipment. Built on a 2008 Ford
F-350 4x4 chassis with an extended cab, this
unit has a wide array of options that give it a
host of capabilities.
Suppression is
provided by a Honda powered Hale HPX100-H20
water pump. The pump originally came
equipped with a 3 gallon fuel tank. At the
customer's request, DPC fabricated a custom 9
gallon fuel tank which will allow the unit to
operate on a fire scene for an extended period
of time. The pump is supplied by a 200
gallon UPF polypropylene water tank.
Mounted on top of
the water tank is a Hannay electric rewind hose
reel that carries 200' of 3/4" booster line.
There are rewind switches located on each side of
the vehicle. An additional 100' of
pre-connected 1-1/2" hose is
stored in a speedlay style tray under the driver's side
storage compartment and is accessible from the
rear of the vehicle. This tray is
removable to allow for easier repacking.
In addition, there is also a hose trough located
on top of the water tank which serves as a
deadlay for 100' of 1-1/2" hose.
At the request of
the LVFD, it was required that the pump controls
be operable with the tailgate in the closed
position. To accommodate this request, an
18" riser was constructed to bring the pump
controls up to the top of the tailgate.
Along with basic controls, a light to illuminate
the gauge panel and a fuel level gauge can also
be found on the control panel. Custom
mounts were fabricated and installed at the rear
of the bed to secure the chainsaw, oil, fuel,
and related items.
There are custom fabricated
aluminum storage compartments located on each
side of the truck. These bins were made
from 1/8" 5052 aluminum and run the full length
of the bed. The lids are constructed from
1/8" diamond plate, secured using a stainless
steel piano hinge and stainless steel latching
hardware. At the front of each compartment
is a Fire Research 12-volt, 300-watt HID quartz light
attached to a
telescoping pole with a weatherproof switch
conveniently located at the base of each light. A Kussmaul
Auto-Eject receptacle is located at the front of
the driver's side compartment and is wired to
the battery charger.
Engine 14's cab is outfitted
with a custom center console constructed from
1/8" 5052 smooth aluminum and coated with black
Line-X. The top is easily removable to
access the electrical wiring and fuses secured
below. Mounted in the center console is a
Motorola Astro mobile radio, Motorola portable
radio charger, Whelen 295HFS electronic siren,
controls for the warning lights, two (2) cup
holders, and a small storage bin. The rear
of the console has ample room for mapbooks and
binders. In the extended cab area, the floor and rear wall was overlaid with diamond
plate for durability and to provide a stable
surface to mount equipment.
Another busy area is
the front bumper. A brush guard, portable
winch receiver with 12-volt connection, and
Perlux fog lights adorn the front of Engine 14.
There are also two (2) Cast Products siren
speakers recess-mounted in each side of the
front bumper. The rear bumper features a permanently mounted
(brand name) (capacity) winch and two auxiliary
backup lights.
The emergency
warning light package is comprised of the latest
LED lights from Whelen. On the cab roof is
a Whelen LFL Liberty Super LED lightbar.
There are two (2) Whelen 500 Series Super LED
lightheads are positioned on each side of the
vehicle and serve as the front and rear
intersection lights. In the front grill
you will find four (4) Whelen TIR3 Super LED
lights. DPC also installed hidden strobe
lights in the front and rear light assemblies.
